“Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone... just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had.”- from The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
When put into the context of the whole book, the significance of those lines is how they affect the entire course of the story's plot. But for readers like me, who always think that what s/he reads is tremendously relevant to her/his existence, the words mean like this:
Others may be dealing with situations we are unaware of or fail to recognize. As a result, it is unfair to criticize others when we do not have the same circumstances that lead to something we think is worth condemning or criticizing. Before making conclusions about others, it is always best to put ourselves in their shoes first, though, more often than not, this is impossible to do so. And that is where we often fail.

What can help is to be more empathic and considerate and show compassion. Also, before making any criticisms, it will help if we do not jump to any conclusions first.
This way, we can truly understand the other person before making unnecessary judgments.
